The most popular cosmetic in the Renaissance period, Queen Elizabeth’s choice of make-up: Venetian Ceruse.
Ceruse was one of the most demanded cosmetics marketed from the 16th to 19th centuries. Women applied a mixture of lead and vinegar to their faces, necks, and chests to make the skin look more youthful and pale.
The problem with it is it is highly poisonous. The side effects are lead-poisoning, hair-loss, skin discolouration, and even fatal. Amazingly, despite being classified as a poison in 1634, it remained popular for another 200 years until it was banned to use.
Lessons should be learnt from Ceruse: Clean beauty, safe ingredients, is very important. After looking at the ingredients of all Deli Beauty’s products again, they are truly clean and safe indeed!
