Does the skin get oilier when it is dehydrated?

 

The answer is no, there is no evidence so far that shows that low water content in the epidermis would increase sebum secretion.

 

The main factor that stimulates sebaceous glands is called androgen. The more androgen activity the more sebum. Although androgen level is genetic, it is affected by other factors like quality of sleep, menstruation, and stress. 

 

High carbohydrate consumption is also linked to increase sebum secretion. Refined carbs like sugar, white rice increases IGF-1 levels, another hormone that triggers sebum secretion.

 

So they say STAY CALM AND EAT LESS CARBS  if you want to regulate sebum secretion. 

 

Although dehydrated skin does not lead to excess sebum secretion, we should always prevent the problem of dehydrated oily skin. Let’s get into that in next post.
